Movie Poster Design #11: Jane Eyre teaser
Teasers usually keep the audience guessing… Not sure how ‘mouth-watering’ this one is, but clean contemporary type suggests a classic, considered, elegant film. Not sure about faces in objects (a trad movie poster device) but nice… just, nice. Oh and can you believe it… Judi Dench in Another Period Drama Shocker!
“Based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, the romantic drama stars Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) in the lead roles. In the story, Jane Eyre flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester. The isolated and imposing residence – and Mr. Rochester’s coldness – have sorely tested the young woman’s resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned. As Jane reflects upon her past and recovers her natural curiosity, she will return to Mr. Rochester – and the terrible secret that he is hiding…”(via facebook)

Movie Poster Design #10: Hobo With A Shotgun
B-Movie madness with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Design to create reaction. Love it or hate it… it works.
“It began as a spoof trailer for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s GRINDHOUSE. Now, it’s a full-fledged feature starring Rutger motherfuckin’ Hauer! There’s been some speculation that Eisener’s film - which depicts an shotgun toting transient’s one-man-war against scumbags of all stripes (including “pedophile santas”) - might premiere as a midnight selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Just another reason to get credentialed and go - although I can’t help but wonder if if might be ready to screen a month earlier somewhere else. Something to consider.  Behold, the first poster for Jason Eisener’s surely-brilliant HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN!”(via aintitcool.com)

Movie Poster Design #9: Errr… He’s Just Not That Into You
Came across this… I have to say, not a film we really took notice of when it came out. We just weren’t that into it. But this poster is cool… designed by Mojo who have an accomplished portfolio of design and movie traliers. Go visit their site.

I know it hurts. But it’s life, and it’s real. And sometimes it fucking hurts, but it’s life, and it’s pretty much all we got.

Movie Poster Design #8: Paris, I’ll Kill You
First artwork for horror anthology Paris, I’ll Kill You.
“What does it look like when Joe Dante, Vincenzo Natali, Christopher Smith, Paco Plaza, the Inside boys, Xavier Gens and Ryuhei Kitamura get together to raise a bit of havoc in Paris? It looks kind of like this. The first sales art for upcoming anthology film Paris, I’ll Kill You has just released at the AFM and for a fun time compare it to the artwork for the romance anthology Paris, I Love You here.”(via twitchfilm.com)

Movie Poster Design #7: SomewhereThis is the new poster for Sofia Coppola’s latest directorial effort Somewhere.
Synopsis: A hard-living Hollywood actor re-examines his life after his 11-year-old daughter surprises him with a visit. The design is beautiful, idyllic, and most of all intriguing. It doesn’t say much, but leaves a lot to the imagination. This is a film I want to see and make up my own mind about. Somewhere will be released in the UK on March 4, 2o11.
The alternative poster (below) is more generic crop on the original but equally cool.

Movie Poster Design #6: Rare Exports: A Christmas TaleThis vintage painted poster for the most interesting genre film of the year is one which maybe divides opinion. It’s kinda like a school project but maybe that’s a cool thing. We can’t make up our minds.
Here’s the more traditional teaser poster.

Movie Poster Design #3: Top GunThe current trend for minimal movie poster design seems over-subscribed lately… but this guy, Matt Owen really gets it. He uses a slice of great iconography with a pinch of humour to create well-baked designs. With all the talk of Top Gun 2, this seemed like the perfect example of his work.

Graphic Design & Film…

…two things that don’t always go together well… Why IS that?!!

For that reason we thought we’d take a look at movie design that works… some that doesn’t… and ignore all the mediocre stuff in between. Plus, we’re teaming up with The Dot & The Line to produce promotional material for independent movies, so we thought we’d better get some inspiration!

Movie Poster Design #1: Rabbit Hole
We like it but still prefer the original lo-fi working design below right.
